DIY....Magnetic learning blocks

I bought some wooden blocks from the craft store awhile ago and have been wanting to do something with them. The other day I was in Lakeshore Learning Store and saw some magnetic letter matching games and I got this idea.

So I went home and had the kids help paint the wooden blocks so they were colorful. Then glued magnets on each block, wrote upper and lower case letters and number/dots on them and we had a fun matching game.

Super easy and inexpensive to make.

Materials:
3/4 wooden blocks
Paint (optional)
Sharpie marker
Magnets
E6000 glue (or strong glue)

 

Have the kids paint the wooden blocks, so they feel important with helping to make the learning game. Great way to have the kids involved in the fun.

Counting and color matching learning game

I was on Pinterest and came across this free mason jar printable by Sweetly Scrapped, so I printed several of them. Thank so much Sweetly Scrapped!!

I colored them different colors and wrote the name of each color on the jar, then laminated them so we could use them several different times.

I bought a bag of jelly beans and poured them in a bowl and gave Jake and Cate each their own mason jar printables.

Cate (2 y/o) had her sort the colors and she also did some counting.

Jake (4 y/o) had him count and match to correct color. Then did some small math asking if I took or added blank # how many does that give him? 

You can also use this as a fun busy bag game as well.

They both were really into this learning game.

Jello Egg Science

Jake loved it  when we made the Fizzing Shamrock that I decide to make some Easter Egg shaped science. We tried jello this time in the mix instead of kool-aid, cause I love all the pastel colors jello has.

Well it was a hit and again he loved it. We had the silicone mold from last year, but you can get it at any craft store and use a 40% or 50% off coupon. That is what I did last year.

To make these eggs all you need is baking soda, jello mix and a little water(mix til it is a paste like feel). Then I placed it in the mold and froze them. They came out hard like a rock. 

Place in a tray and add vinegar/water mixture in a spray bottle and let the kids do a little fizzing science. The little flowers are table toppers from Dollar Tree and then added a little glitter for it to sparkle. 

Not only is it science related, but also great way to build fine motor skills.

Dinosaur Ice Excavation

We got these fun dinosaur fossils from Micheal's Dinosaur Skulls Tube, by Safari LTD for $3.99 on clearance so I picked up a couple. You can order them online if you don't have a Micheal's near but will pay more for them. 

I got large balloons and placed the skulls in then and filled with water to freeze them to make Ice Eggs. Then the kids would break open the ice to get the dinosaur skulls and baby dinosaurs.

Materials:

Dinosaur toys

Balloons

Water

Freezer

Bin for the ice when frozen

Excavating Tools(we used a wooden hammers, screw drivers and goggles) Can purchase all of them for $1.00 at Dollar Tree)

You can do this several ways:

Make a block of ice with toys inside

Make frozen balloons like we did

Make a bucket of ice... here is one we did over the summer Pirate ice treasure

Different excavating tools you can use as well are an old tooth brush, spray bottles(with warm water), shovels, spoons, salt.

This is a fun activity along with great for building fine motor skills and eye/hand coordination.

Jake really loved doing this with the wooden hammer and screwdriver.

It was little hard for Cate.

Loved all of Jake's face expressions, you can really tell he enjoyed this.

Rainbow pot of gold finger print keepsake

Fun and simple finger print keepsake craft for kids to make.

I drew the pot with a black sharpie, on card stock and then cut out circles for the coins.

Had the kids glue the gold coins on and then we did their finger prints in each color of the rainbow.

Materials:

White card stock paper

Colored ink pads

Glue

I love the top picture of the kids when Jake was helping Cate do the finger prints.
