Kids ice art science

We have been waiting for cold temps to do a freezing project like we did last year. Well last night was our lucky night we had temps in the teens. So we gathered some fruit from the kitchen and cut it up.

"J" started putting it in the aluminum pan and said, "Mom we can make a rainbow". So that is what we did.

Materials:

Orange

Lemon

Lime

Blueberries

Cranberries

Water

Rope

Aluminum pan (disposable)

This project is fun for kids and also teaches them about floating, sinking and freezing. When placing the fruit in the pan you can talk about what fruits you think would sink and what ones would float when adding water. Then ask why?

"J" loves doing science projects. Last year we did an ice art as well be sure to check it out.

Exploring colors sensory play

Today J said , "Mom I want to do a project, like color mixing."  I needed to make some ice cube for some ice play they like to do during the week when it is hot. So he helped.

I took out water, food coloring, and we added some of the snow cone flavor as well, cause J wanted them to taste good if he wanted to eat some....kids too funny.

Who would have thought that this could entertain a kid for 45 min. He used the syringe and the dropper(great for fine motor skills). Mixed colors together, then added some flavor. It was like he had his own little experiment shop going on.

After he was done we placed in the freezer and let them freeze during nap time.



No only is this a great fine motor and eye/hand coordination project for kids, but also great for learning color mixture.

Alphabet Ice sensory play

J and C love the ice sensory play. So to add a little education to the fun play I took our alphabet magnets and placed then in ice trays with water and vinegar mix, then froze them to make ice.

Then I took them out the next day and set up a fun alphabet sensory play. Took some of the other alphabet toys we had and placed all around the table and added the ice cubes to it.

Then the kids added salt, water, vinegar and baking soda to the ice to get the letters out of the ice.

When they got the letters out of the ice we matched the upper and lower case letters together.


Materials:
Magnet letters(Dollar Tree) or any little letters you want to place in the ice.
Salt
Baking soda
Vinegar
Ice trays

This is a great fine motor skill along with eye/hand coordination for kids. Then they are playing as well as learning the letter reorganization.

Dinosaur sensory volcano fun

J loves making volcano's and mixing the vinegar and baking soda together to watch it bubble. So I set up a dinosaur sensory table with J's toy dinosaur's.

Made sand with salt and brown paint, added rocks, bowl of baking soda, blue vinegar water for the lake and then colored vinegar ice cube's I saw on http://www.thegoldengleam.com. The kiddos had fun playing.

I loved how C got into it and when she mixed the vinegar and baking soda together she would say,"WOOOOW" it was too cute.

Materials:
salt and paint (makes the brown sand)
play rocks
dinosaur
made the volcano out of modeling clay
food coloring
vinegar

This is a good sensory play for mixing things to make science.

Pirate sensory treasure ice fun

It was a HOT day out and J wanted to play on the deck while sister was napping, so what better way to stay cool then to be playing with ice. I set up a pirate sensory table.

J is all into pirates and loves the show Jake and the Neverland Pirates. So I buried treasure in the ice and had him find them.

We used baking soda and vinegar to try and melt the ice, then he used his hammer, after that he went to the water hose.

Materials:
Ice
Treasure(we used necklaces, rings, coins, shells)

Explore with ice

 

It was a HOT day and so I thought it would be fun to play with ice and water. We did it during Winter, the kids loved it but didn't play with the water since it was cold. This time we changed it up a little we used baby oil, salt and I also filled the water balloons with water beads.

J had alot of fun. This is a great science activity and the kids love it.

Materials:
Water balloons frozen to make ice balls
Food coloring or you can use Kool-Aid packets(for a fun smell)
Baby oil
Water
Salt

All you need to do is let the kids explore to see what happens with the different ingredients when poured on the ice.

 

We also had fun exploring with sprinkling Kool-Aid on the ice as well. Gave it a fun smell when exploring.
